Galveston: Residents Complaining of Possum Intruders

Vincent Sorrentino thought it was a mouse. However, when he stuck his head in the dark plumbing access hole in his closet, it wasn’t a mouse that stared back at him.

GALVESTON, Texas – When Vincent Sorrentino found an opossum in his house, he thought it was a mouse. But when he looked closer, he realized it was an opossum hissing at him from inside a dark hole.

That thing scared me, he said. I was minding my own business, just walking along, when I saw a creature that scared me. It was probably three feet from me and then it just disappeared under the beams, and I’m thinking, Oh no. What was that thing?

When Sorrentino posted his animal troubles on Facebook, he received numerous responses from area residents also experiencing furry nighttime intruders.

The Sorrentino family is just trying everything to get rid of the animal that has been coming around their house at night. They’ve tried advice from others, live traps, coyote urine – but nothing has worked so far.

Galveston County Health District animal services manager Kim Schoolcraft says that we must understand that the animals were here long before we built houses and that we have taken their habitat. Sorrentino said he would try the trap a few more nights before he calls for help from the city.

The Galveston Police Department‘s animal services unit provides trapping services to residents.

If the sick animal can be treated, it is taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center. If the possum or raccoon is healthy, it is moved.

The man continued, “After the hurricane, it seems we’re getting more calls about them. I’m guessing it’s because the floodwaters chased these guys out of their natural habitat, and they’re moving into the city.”

While the animal services unit does not track animal captures, Caldwell said the biggest raccoon caught weighed about 20 pounds and large possums range from 10 to 12 pounds. These animals can be a nuisance and cause damage to homes and businesses. It is important to be aware of their size and behavior so that you can take the necessary precautions to protect your property.

Although possums may act fierce when captured, they generally just open their mouth and bare their teeth. After that, they will slump into a stiff position, playing dead. However, it is the masked bandit that residents should handle with caution.

Raccoons can be dangerous, she said. Once they have taken up residence in their home, they will protect it. If you do trap one, know that they can bite.

The best way to get rid of nocturnal creatures in your house is to remove the things that attract them – like picking up trash and securing your house.

In my home, I use cayenne pepper to deter furry intruders. I sprinkle it around the areas they are trying to get into and this usually scares them off. If not, then the next step is using a live animal trap. They can be bought at feed and sporting goods stores.

Schoolcraft’s belief in respecting wildlife and living with them is a testament to the interconnectedness of all life on earth. By valuing the role that these creatures play in our ecosystems, we can learn to live harmoniously with them. This not only benefits the animals but also humankind as a whole, as we come to better understand our place in the natural world.

Opossum

Opossums are nocturnal marsupials that are often mistaken for rodents. They are relatively harmless animals but can become a nuisance if they take up residence in your home.

If you see an opossum in your yard, do not approach it. Instead, call your local animal control agency or wildlife removal company so that they can safely capture and remove the animal.

You can also take steps to opossum-proof your home by removing attractants such as food and water, and sealing off any openings that they could use to enter your house.

Raccoon

Raccoons are nuisance animals that can become aggressive if they feel threatened. They are known to attack people and pets, and can also carry diseases such as rabies.

Rabies

Rabies is a rare but serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. The virus is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop.

Raccoons, bats, and foxes are the most common animals that carry rabies in the United States. If you are bitten by one of these animals, you will need to receive a series of vaccinations to prevent the disease from developing.
